Beginners Guide to Tarot - Choosing a Deck

For me, Tarot is a huge part of my spiritual practises.

This is a series I’ve wanted to write for a long time! Tarot was the first part of my spiritual journey and I wanted to share some helpful hints, tips and my “cheat sheet” for card meanings. I by no means am an expert, I am still very much learning! But I wanted to share in my learning journey and give advice on what I’ve learnt so far!

Choosing the right deck can seem very daunting at the start, but it really does not have to be! I recommend focusing on decks aimed at beginners (seems obvious, I know!) and finding one that alligns best with your spirtual beliefs. So when I chose my first deck, I was completely new to all things spirutuality, but I knew I wanted to get something with a positive vibe and good energy - so I went with the Good Tarot deck!

This wasn’t the perfect first deck, as the cards vary a lot from the Rider-Waite decks I’d been learnign about and researching.

Tip One - Get a deck that alligns with your spiritual beliefs

Tip Two - Get a deck that suits what you’ve already researched

I should have followed tip two, don’t be like me! My secind deck suited what I had been researching a lot more, and it was the Tattoo Tarot deck. Like the Good Tarot the cards are beautiful, honestly I just adore shuffling them and taking in the art work. But they matched much more with the Rider-Waite deck, which meant I understood them a lot better.

Tip Three - Do research deck types and card sizes

This was something I didn’t even think about until I spoke to other tarot readers. Tarot decks are mainly similar in size and shape to playing cards, so small-ish and rectangular. However some may be larger (like the Tattoo Tarot) or even round. So choosing a deck based on what you feel would be comfortable for shuffling, carrying with you and placing in your home, is very important. Then as mentioned above, some decks use their own versions within both the major and minor arcana. I’ll cover this in more detail in a further post, but knowing what may have been changed can be very useful for beginners!

Tip Four - Go with your gut!

This seems like the most obvious tip, but its here for a reason. I you’re choosing between two decks and you cannot decide, follow your gut instinct. I tend to do this by flipping a coin and seeing if I’m happy or diappointed with the result. The right deck will come to you and you’ll love exploring it and learning all about it.

If you don’t know where to start, here are three decks I adore (which does contain an affliate link!)

Deck One -The Good Tarot | Deck Two - Light Seers Tarot | Deck Three - Smith Rider Waite

What deck did you start with? Let me know in the comments!
